Social -- Organized Recreational Activities

Consider Quilting

As you begin scheduling your fall and winter activities, consider becoming a part of Quilting at Lord of Life. Quilters meet in the Social Hall, 8:30 a.m. until about noon, on the second and fourth Wednesdays of each month. This is time for good fellowship, getting to know some new people, and making quilts that can touch many lives.

Among the items made are full- and single-size quilts, baby quilts, lap robes and sleeping mats. These are given to Habitat for Humanity, Phoenix Indian Hospital, Clinica Adelante Day Care Center for migrant workers’ children, Eve’s Place, New Life Shelter, Lutheran Navajo Mission at Rock Point, Grace Lutheran Church Clinic, West Valley Child Crisis Center, Del Webb Hospital, and Lord of Life’s Christmas Adopt-a-Family program.

No quilting skills are needed. There are sewing tasks to be done but also cutting, tying the quilts, putting together the tops, fillers and backings. If you are unable to come on Wednesday mornings but would enjoy sewing quilt squares together at home, packets of squares are available for your use. Also needed are thread, sheets to be used for backings, blankets or thin mattress pads for fillers, and cotton material of any length. For further information, call Jan Yetter at 584-4879.                Return to top

Monday Golf

Golf anyone?? We play every Monday morning at one of the executive courses— Stardust, Echo Mesa, or Desert Trails. You don’t need a handicap, only a set of clubs and the desire to enjoy playing with different people each week. We enjoy fellowship and good times. We play as early as possible, but if you like a later t-time, let us know and we can try to change your t-time. Some of us go to breakfast afterwards and you are all welcome.

This year will be somewhat different from last year. We can no longer have “blocked t-times” and we will be fined $10 if we do not cancel within one hour of our t-time; therefore, it is necessary to put a slip into the blue envelope at the golf course telling us that you wish to play the next week. We will only put those people into the mix who have put a slip in the envelope or who call Norma (975-4441) by Wednesday.

If you have questions, call Nappy Bradley at 214- 6139, Norma Yehle at 975-4441, or Dee Donohue at 214-2386, otherwise fill out the form below and give it to someone in the church office. If you are still away for the summer, send it to the church office. Please include $5 to take care of expenses for mailing, etc.  Return to top

10 a.m. - 3 p.m., Room 1

The Writer’s Group from Lord of Life is offering a Writer’s Workshop at the church on Thursday, April 10, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. The workshop is open to the public. Anyone who wants to learn more about writing for personal pleasure or who wants to publish their work is encouraged to attend. Participants are asked to bring a “Brown Bag” lunch. Fee of $10 for church members and $15 for non-members may be paid at the church office or at the door the day of the workshop.

Linda Gillis from Sun City, a member of Lord of Life, is coordinating the event. Published authors of the writer’s group will present information on the publishing process. Gillis will give tips on using the computer to safely organize your writing.

Jan Weeks from Colorado Junction, Colorado, will be the guest presenter for the workshop. Weeks, a former English teacher, offersworkshops, editing, and other services through her company, Weeks Literary Service (www.weekslit.com) and has published two novels and numerous articles, poems, and short stories in local, regional, and national markets. Both Gillis and Weeks won the 2006 Guideposts Writer’s Workshop contest and are contributors to Guideposts Magazine.

Among Weeks’ presentations for the day will be “Show, Don’t Tell: How Do They Do That?” Participants will learn how to make their writing come alive by describing the action and characters with words that grab the readers. Bring your favorite pen and notebook; there will be opportunities to practice and share in a non-threatening environment.

For reservations or more information and to reserve your space, please contact Linda Gillis at 602/909-7847 or lindagillis@yahoo.com by April 14.        Return to top
