Notes from Your Library

Anniversary Video Available

Bill and Ginny Wegman have donated a seven hour VCR and a DVD of the 13 occasions of our 25th Anniversary Year Celebration, in our library. You are welcome to check it out and view it before it becomes part of the archives.

New in the Library

January is the first month of 2007 and we are introducing Al Gore's new book An Inconvenient Truth which is the first book produced to offset 100% of carbon emissions generated from production activities with renewable  energy! The paper pages come from pulp produced chlorine free using 100% green power!

The book is colorful with pictures, graphs, photos of the family. It is a universal subject about saving planet Earth and accompanied with a film that has toured movie houses all summer. A DVD is available for you to borrow.

Adding to the collection is The Jesus Dynasty by scholar Paul Tabor. Working like a detective to uncover facts he has traced the legacy of Jesus and his life and times.

Also new, Secrets of Mary Magdalene. As quoted by Elaine Pagels, she says this Mary has been airbrushed out of history and now is being rediscovered mostly because of the popularity of the Da Vinci Code thriller. This book selects views from many writers and lets you in on the secrets hidden for so long.

Last but not least is Edmund Morris's new addition to Eminent Lives Biographies, a brief taste of the greatest composer of them all--Beethoven, The Universal Composer. Though not noted for being a musician, Morris is a well trained pianist and does a good job of describing the genius of this titan of the 19th Century.

Now proceed into the New Year with resolution to read one or all of these new selections. Good reading in 2007 from your friendly church library.

The reorganization of the Library is essentially finished, and hopefully the goal of making it easier for our users to find books, videos and audio has been accomplished. In addition, the computer application now installed should be more efficient for the library staff in terms of processing new material and handling returns.

Here is a summary of the changes:

There will no longer be catalog cards or card pockets in the books or videos. Instead, a signout sheet will be used to check in and check out the material.

Likewise, there will not be a card catalog file for use in locating material. In lieu of the catalog (the upkeep of this was very laborintensive), there will be several computer listings sorted by title, author or category. A separate listing will indicate all new materialnot included in the computer listings.

The Dewey decimal system is no longer used for categorizing and filing non-fiction. A simplified system of about 45 categories was created, and each category is assigned a unique prefix. This makes it easier to browse and find the material.

The books have been rearranged, but the shelves are well labeled with the categories found on the shelf.

For those familiar with using a computer, the new library application will allow a user to search the entire volume of books, videos or audios for keywords (like Google), and a list will be provided for all items matching the keyword.

The check-out system will provide the librarian with an overdue listing and the ability to automatically send e-mail notices to those who have material overdue.

More importantly than the changes, is that our members utilize our library. We have 2165 books, videos and CDs, and we encourage all to take advantage of the vast material we have. Take a look at the listing in the library of all new material recently obtained!

Video Donations Welcomed

The libraries video section is very popular with our members, and so we would like to ask you to donate any previously watched videos you have lying around the house and don’t plan on watching again. They can be fiction or non-fiction.

DID YOU KNOW your library has videos and audiocassettes in addition to fiction and educational books? If you miss one of the Sunday afternoon movies at the church, they are available in the library. This week there is a display of the videos -- both educational and fiction that are available to you. Look for them on the table as you enter the library. If you want to take one home, fill out the library card and leave it in the library.

Children's books available

If you have grandchildren visiting you this summer, you may want to introduce them to the children's section in the library. Many children' books will be found on the lower shelf of an island in the center of the shelves. Recently a series of videos has been donated that will appeal to children of all ages. These are titled "Greatest Heroes and Legends". David and Goliath, Moses, and Jonah are among those portrayed. You may check these out just like a book.
