Writer’s Workshop Event
Thursday, April 10
10 a.m. - 3 p.m., Room 1

The Writer’s Group from Lord of Life is offering a Writer’s Workshop at the church on Thursday, April 10, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. The workshop is open to the public. Anyone who wants to learn more about writing for personal pleasure or who wants to publish their work is encouraged to attend. Participants are asked to bring a “Brown Bag” lunch. Fee of $10 for church members and $15 for non-members may be paid at the church office or at the door the day of the workshop.

Linda Gillis from Sun City, a member of Lord of Life, is coordinating the event. Published authors of the writer’s group will present information on the publishing process. Gillis will give tips on using the computer to safely organize your writing.

Jan Weeks from Colorado Junction, Colorado, will be the guest presenter for the workshop. Weeks, a former English teacher, offersworkshops, editing, and other services through her company, Weeks Literary Service (www.weekslit.com) and has published two novels and numerous articles, poems, and short stories in local, regional, and national markets. Both Gillis and Weeks won the 2006 Guideposts Writer’s Workshop contest and are contributors to Guideposts Magazine.

Among Weeks’ presentations for the day will be “Show, Don’t Tell: How Do They Do That?” Participants will learn how to make their writing come alive by describing the action and characters with words that grab the readers. Bring your favorite pen and notebook; there will be opportunities to practice and share in a non-threatening environment.

For reservations or more information and to reserve your space, please contact Linda Gillis at 602/909-7847 or lindagillis@yahoo.com by April 14.        Return to top

CNN Presents “God’s Warriors”
Tuesdays April 1-April 29
6:30 - 8:00 p.m. in the Social Hall
Discussion led by Pastor Alan Lindberg

Last summer CNN presented this six-hour series featuring Islam, Christianity and Judaism. The programs explore the basis and nature of religious fundamentalism and what happens when radical belief and action are mixed. Deftly tackling this potentially explosive topic, correspondent Christine Amanpour showcases the volatility that ensues “when piety meets politics.” She says, “There are millions of people around the world who feel that their faith is being ignored — pushed aside — and they are certain they know how to make the world right. We cannot and should not ignore them. And, with this report, we’ve tried to explain them.”

Along with a prepared study guide, Pastor Alan Lindberg, of Slinger, Wisconsin and Sun City Grand, will host the series each week. He has served in ELCA congregations in North Dakota and Wisconsin. He was the host and producer for 15 years of “Face to Face,” a Sunday morning religious talk show, on Milwaukee’s NBC TV affiliate.

This education and discussion series will be as follows:

April 1 and April 8
“God’s Jewish Warriors”

They draw inspiration from the Book of Ezekiel: “Ye shall dwell in the land that I gave your fathers.” For them, Israel’s victory in the Six-Day War in 1967 meant the fulfillment of prophecy. They believe that when Jews return to their Biblical homeland and live according to the Torah, then the Messiah can come. Following the war that redesigned the map of the Holy Land, Jewish settlements in the captured territory have become the central uncompromising principle of right-wing Jewish settlers.

April 16 and April 22
“God’s Muslim Warriors”

Islam is the fastest growing religion in America and Europe, and tension between Muslim and Western cultures is also growing. A recent Pew Forum poll found that young Muslims were almost twice as likely as their parents to attend mosque and identify themselves as Muslim first and American second. They are also more outwardly religious, more likely to wear Muslim dress and more pious than older Muslims. Perhaps most unsettling was that 26 percent thought that terrorist suicide bombings can sometimes be justified.

April 29
“God’s Christian Warriors”

In the late 1970s, modern conservative Christians began to play a bigger role in American politics, largely in response to the U.S. Supreme Court decision to legalize abortion, Roe v. Wade. The Rev. Jerry Falwell founded a faith-based political movement, the “Moral Majority.” By the 1980 national election, the group had played a role in the defeat of 12 incumbent U.S. senators. In his last interview, conducted just one week before his death, Falwell gave new insight into the founding of the movement, his three-decade battle against abortion, and his feelings about the upcoming presidential campaign.

“God’s Warriors” was filmed in the United Kingdom, Egypt, Iran, the West Bank, the Netherlands and the United States. Be sure to take advantage to become informed on this vital topic by attending all the sessions on Tuesdays in April from 6:30 - 8 p.m. in the Social Hall.

Prophets and Prophecy
Tuesdays, May 6-27
6:30-8 p.m., Classroom 1

Taught by Robert Wright, Ph.D. Robert Wright, Professor Emeritus of Hebrew Bible at Temple University, will share his knowledge and wisdom on the topic of prophecy. His PowerPoint presentation will explore the following areas of thought:

†   May 6 “Divination: Ancient and Modern: The dangers of sticking your finger in the Bible!”
†   May 13 “Apocalyptic: False TV Preachers Exposed!”
†   May 20 “When the Prophet’s Predictions Fail, in the Bible and Today.”
†   May 27 “Fulfillments” in the New Testament of the Prophet’s words: Why Mary did not name her son “Emmanuel.”

In order to accommodate the schedules of both Alan Lindberg and Robert Wright, and bring their excellent educational resources to Lord of Life, Pastor Jan’s “Table Talk” Bible study on Jesus’ parables has been postponed until a later date.                  Return to top
